MARIE CURIE LADIES DRIVING CHALLENGE 2007

After a break last year the LalPac Ladies decided that in 2007 we would again tackle the Marie Curie Ladies Driving Challenge.

Having experienced some really "English" weather during the past two challenges, exceedingly hot year one and wet, wet, wet for year two, we thought 2007 would produce a perfect day. The morning started out sunny with a nice breeze blowing but by the afternoon clouds had gathered and the breeze took on a distinct chill.

Did that stop us? No. We just sent a "spare" back to the cars to retrieve cardigans, jackets and whatever else we could huddle into for warmth.

Two new challenges awaited us this year - some unsuspecting driving schools had volunteered to take us around a course which involved a forward slalom, parking into bays and a slalom in reverse. The hard bit? Trying to keep the cones in view, they had a habit of vanishing and would pop up unexpectedly in the mirror!. Rumour had it that there was £25 'fine' every time we knocked a cone over -we managed to leave them all intact.

The same could not be said for the hedge! - Liz managed to clamber into an Army lorry - you know the sort that you see carrying troops around - and off-roaded it around a very bumpy track. On return to the starting line the soldier leapt out and started inspecting his bodywork, we all stood back and watched as he removed the foliage and heaved his bumper to bring it back into line. Liz's excuse - "I'm only little and the steering wheel is huge and I lost it on the bend". Oh well at least the hedge won't need cutting for a while!.

This year the LalPac Ladies raised £758.04. The total for the day was £24,914 which equates to 1,245 hours of nursing time. Not bad for a good day out.

LalPac Christmas Party – December 2006

Christmas time again – and the party season is in full swing. LalPac staff celebrated the season with a bowling session at the Christie Miller centre in Melksham.

Four teams of four battled it out for the highest score of the evening, with the male members of the group trying to outdo each other in the speed stakes, let alone the number of pins demolished.

Honour satisfied, we all retired to the Kings Arms in Melksham where a delicious meal awaited us. Fund raising this year was for CLIC Sargent and the usual method of extracting money was employed – a raffle – prize donations ranged from a Pilates ball to a LalPac Mug brimming with jelly snakes and gift wrapped in cellophane.

A ten question general knowledge quiz was also handed out – with participants paying £1.00 for the privilege of making their brains ache. We had a lot of people trying to abstain as “we don’t know the answers” but persuasion prevailed and the winner of the bottle was Matt Yorke with an impressive 6/10 score, with a lot of 5/10’s.

Just in case you are worried about the brain power of LalPac staff, a sample question is:

“Which American star has announced he’s appearing as Captain Hook in the panto Peter Pan in London this year; 1. Richard Gere; 2. Dustin Hoffman; 3. David Hasselhoff; 4. David Schwimmer.”

Answer is available from Lesley – for a small fee to CLIC charity, as are all ten questions with answers.

We are pleased to announce that £142.55 is now winging its way to the charity.

LalPac got into the charity mood quite by accident...

In 2004 one of our ladies suggested a team enter the Marie Curie Ladies Driving Challenge. Say no more, three volunteers were immediately found, then four in 2005... and the rest as they say is history (see below "A Driving Challenge").

We all realise how lucky we all are at LalPac, and that small fund raising events can made a difference to people less fortunate than ourselves.

If you feel you would like to boost any of our fund raising efforts, we are always willing to take a cheque made out to the relevant charity. Some of our customers have already supported us in this way and we thank them for their generosity.

Dress Down Fridays

Our latest charity initiative was suggested by one of our Technical Help Desk team. The idea; on selected Friday's throughout the year we are going to have to pay £1.00 for coming to work in our casual clothes. In order to benefit the most people a different charity would be nominated each time, and on the first Friday, which was 4 August, the funds were raised for CLIC Sargent.

CLIC (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood) and Sargent Cancer Care for Children merged in January 2005 to become the UK's leading children's cancer charity. Both have a rich history of excellent care and support, and together they are stronger and more effective, providing more for more children and young people with cancer and their families.

We are all allowed to nominate a charity for Dress Down Friday, and the choice of this charity was by Peter our Technical Director. Peter has set up a "JustGiving" webpage for people to donate to if they wish. Peter has vowed to quit smoking his beloved cigars if you sponsor him. What's even better is that for every £1 you donate, Peter will double the amount for 'Clic' all from his own pocket. Dig deep!!
